VisiRule for HealthCare

Rule‑Based Medical Expert Systems and Clinical Decision Support

VisiRule enables healthcare professionals to design, validate, and deliver online medical expert systems without programming. Using intuitive visual decision trees, clinicians can capture best‑practice medical knowledge and deliver personalised advice, diagnosis support, treatment guidance, and wellness plans. These systems form the foundation of modern Clinical Decision Support Systems and can be combined with LLMs to create powerful hybrid AI solutions for medical diagnostics and patient engagement.

Medical Expert Systems and Clinical Decision Support

VisiRule provides a structured way to model clinical reasoning using clear, auditable rules. This makes it ideal for:

  • symptom assessment

  • triage and risk evaluation

  • treatment recommendations

  • patient intake automation

  • guideline adherence

  • medical calculators and scoring tools

By encoding medical logic explicitly, VisiRule ensures consistent, explainable outcomes that support clinical governance and reduce variability in care.

WoundCare Medical Expert System Demo

WoundCare is a VisiRule‑based medical expert system created by a practising nurse—without any programming—to manage pressure ulcer guidelines.

  • In hospitals, nurses can access the system on a workstation or mobile device to determine the correct dressing and print recommendations for the patient record.

  • In home visits, the system helps assess wound progression, suggests updated treatments, and flags when Tissue Viability Nurse (TVN) involvement is required.

  • The system supports continuity of care by storing recommendations and linking to clinical guidelines, images, and specialist advice.

This demonstrates how VisiRule empowers clinicians to build practical, safe, and scalable CDS tools.

The first storyboard illustrates the system being used by a nurse in a hospital accessing the system on a computer on wheels. The nurse is unsure about which dressing to use and is using the system to find an answer. After dressing the wound, the nurse prints the recommendation. The storyboard highlights decision support and the promotion of continuity of care by storing the recommendation within the patient folder.

WoundCare Medical Expert System Part 1

The second storyboard shows a nurse using WoundCare on their mobile phone while visiting a patient at home. The assessment indicates that this wound has gotten worse. The system recommends a new dressing, however it also highlights the need to involve a TVN. This highlights the use of the system on a mobile phone and demonstrates elements such as images, links to guidelines and recommendations for further input from other specialists.

What Is Clinical Decision Support?

Clinical Decision Support (CDS) provides timely, relevant information at the point of care to help clinicians make informed decisions. CDS systems can:

  • automate routine checks

  • highlight potential risks

  • provide evidence‑based suggestions

  • support patient self‑service triage

  • reduce errors and improve efficiency

The Five Rights of CDS

Effective CDS delivers:

  • the right information

  • to the right people

  • via the right channels

  • in the right format

  • at the right point in the workflow

Why CDS Matters in Healthcare

CDS improves clinical quality, reduces costs, and enhances patient safety by ensuring that decisions are guided by validated medical knowledge. VisiRule supports this by providing:

  • deterministic, rule‑based logic

  • transparent decision pathways

  • audit trails for governance

  • consistent application of guidelines

  • scalable delivery across devices

Capturing Medical Knowledge with VisiRule

VisiRule represents medical knowledge using decision‑tree flowcharts enriched with:

  • logic and formulae

  • algorithms and calculations

  • definitions and explanations

  • links to guidelines

  • graphics and images

This makes it ideal for building medical flowcharts, symptom checkers, clinical pathways, and diagnostic tools that reflect real clinical reasoning.

AUTHOR

Create and test medical decision charts using VisiRule Author.

PUBLISH

Compile charts into interactive questionnaires with embedded rules.

EXECUTE

Run the logic on VisiRule Server, presenting questions dynamically based on user responses.

GENERATE

Produce conclusions, reports, documents, and outputs tailored to each case.

Personalised Medical Advice Generation

VisiRule enables clinicians and patients to access personalised guidance anytime, anywhere. Automated systems scale effortlessly, delivering consistent advice while generating a digital record of each session. These records can feed into:

  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

  • workflow automation

  • reporting and analytics

Medical Calculators and Scoring Tools

VisiRule can implement medical calculators that combine patient inputs with established clinical formulae. These tools support evidence‑based decision‑making and can fulfil CDS requirements for Meaningful Use.

Levels of Control in CDS

CDS systems vary in how much control they give users. VisiRule supports:

  • on‑demand decision support

  • automated prompts and alerts

  • clinician override options

  • recommendations aligned with clinical intent

CDS may remind, inform, correct, or recommend changes to clinical plans.

Medical ChatBots

VisiRule can power intelligent, rule‑driven medical chatbots that guide users through structured assessments while maintaining clinical safety and explainability.

Building Medical Diagnostic Expert Systems

VisiRule allows non‑programmers to rapidly create diagnostic systems that:

  • ask structured questions

  • apply clinical rules

  • direct users to the correct diagnosis

  • display a visual “road map” of the decision path

This ensures transparency and supports patient understanding.

This means that non-programmers can rapidly build and deliver intelligent, interactive Clinical Decision Support systems (CDSs) which give medical advice of a consistent and assured quality.

Benefits of Medical Expert Systems in Healthcare

VisiRule helps healthcare organisations:

  • improve productivity and internal processes

  • deliver consistent, high‑quality advice

  • reduce costs and clinical risk

  • share specialist knowledge widely

  • free clinicians from routine tasks

  • focus expert time on complex cases

With decades of experience in rule‑based systems, LPA provides a robust foundation for combining VisiRule with other AI techniques such as NLP, CBR, and LLM‑based diagnostics.
